Connect Shopify to MailNesto

Sync customers who accept marketing, track orders and revenue, recover abandoned checkouts and import your history.

Overview

Shopify and MailNesto, together

The Shopify connection sends your store’s customers, orders, products and checkouts to MailNesto as they happen, using webhooks that Shopify signs with your store’s own secret. Every delivery is checked against that secret before anything is saved, so nobody else can post fake orders into your account.

Only customers who accepted email marketing in Shopify become subscribed contacts, and the consent is recorded as “Accepted marketing at checkout (Shopify)”. Orders from everyone else still count towards your revenue reports, so you see the full picture without mailing people who never asked to hear from you.

Once orders flow in, campaign reports show revenue in rupees next to opens and clicks, and the same data powers cart recovery, reorder reminders and product blocks.

What syncs

What moves between Shopify and MailNesto

Into MailNestoCustomers who accept marketing

Customer creation and update webhooks: email, first and last name, city, Shopify tags and the Shopify customer ID. New contacts are created only when the customer’s email marketing state is “subscribed”; existing contacts are updated either way.

Into MailNestoPaid orders

Order number, total, currency, item count and each line (product, quantity, price). An order is credited to the email whose link the buyer landed from, or otherwise to their last email click in the 5 days before buying.

Into MailNestoProducts

Name, link, image, price, compare-at price, product type (as category) and stock. Products deleted in Shopify are archived, so they drop out of product blocks.

Into MailNestoCheckouts in progress

Checkout creation and update webhooks become carts with their items, total and Shopify’s recovery link. When the order arrives, the cart is marked recovered.

Into MailNestoPast customers, orders and products

A one-time background import through a read-only Admin API token; running it again skips what is already in.

Set it up

Connect Shopify in a few minutes

  1. 1

    Connect in MailNesto

Open Integrations → Connect an app → Shopify. Pick a list for new contacts, add tags if you like (for example “shopify”), and click Connect. The drawer that opens shows your private webhook URL.

  2. 2

    Create the webhooks in Shopify

In Shopify admin go to Settings → Notifications → Webhooks. Create webhooks for Customer creation, Customer update, Order payment, Product creation, Product update and Product deletion, format JSON, each pointing at the URL from MailNesto. For cart recovery, add Checkout creation and Checkout update as well.

  3. 3

    Paste the signing secret

Shopify shows a signing secret under the webhook list. Copy it into the “Webhook signing secret” field in MailNesto. Deliveries that don’t match it are rejected and logged.

  4. 4

    Bring in your history

Open the Past data tab. In Shopify admin create a custom app (Settings → Apps and sales channels → Develop apps) with the read_customers, read_orders and read_products scopes, plus read_all_orders if you want orders older than 60 days. Install it, paste the Admin API token and your mystore.myshopify.com address, click “Check and save”, then “Import past data”. The Activity tab lists each webhook as it arrives.

Ideas

What you can do with it

Recover abandoned checkouts

Turn on the Abandoned cart recovery recipe. A checkout left alone for an hour (you can change the delay) sends a reminder with the exact items, the total and a “Finish checking out” link that opens Shopify’s saved checkout, then a last reminder later. If the order comes in, the cart is marked recovered and the journey stops.

Remind regulars before they run out

A coffee roaster in Bengaluru whose customers reorder every five weeks can use the Time to reorder recipe. Each customer’s own order rhythm predicts their next order date, and the email arrives a few days before with the products they are likely to want.

Welcome your biggest spenders

The VIP welcome recipe uses a segment of customers whose lifetime spend passes ₹10,000. Change the threshold to suit your prices and add a coupon block for early access to your Diwali sale.

FAQ

Questions about the Shopify integration

Will customers who didn’t opt in get my campaigns?

No. A customer becomes a subscribed contact only if Shopify says they accepted email marketing. Their orders are still recorded for revenue reports, and a contact who is already on your list is kept up to date.

Does MailNesto change anything in my Shopify store?

No. Webhooks only send data out of Shopify, and the Admin API token used for past data needs read scopes only. Delete the custom app in Shopify at any time to revoke it.

Why did a checkout not get a recovery email?

Cart reminders go to people who are already subscribed contacts. A guest who never opted in still appears in the Carts list on the Orders & revenue tab, but no marketing email is sent to them.

How is an order credited to a campaign?

If the buyer arrived through a link in your email, that email gets the credit. Otherwise the order goes to the last email they clicked in the 5 days before ordering. Orders with no click in that window show as “Not from email”.
