Preference centre: what it means

A page where subscribers choose which emails they receive and how often, or update their details. It gives people an alternative to unsubscribing from everything.

A preference centre is a page, linked from your emails, where subscribers control what they receive. Typical options include choosing topics (new arrivals, offers, blog posts, events), choosing frequency, pausing emails for a while, updating details such as name or city, and unsubscribing from everything. It turns a single yes-or-no decision into a set of choices.

The main benefit is keeping people who are tired of some emails but not all of them. Someone who only wants event invitations, or who is too busy this month, might otherwise unsubscribe completely or reach for the spam button. Giving them a smaller, more relevant stream keeps the relationship going and reduces complaints, which protects your reputation.

A preference centre also supports privacy obligations. Under India’s DPDP Act and the GDPR, people should be able to manage and withdraw consent easily, and some may want to see what data you hold. Letting subscribers update details and request a copy of their data from the same page reduces manual work for your team.

Keep it simple. Three to six clearly named topics work better than fifteen. Never hide the “unsubscribe from all” option or make people log in. And only offer choices you will honour: a frequency option is pointless if every email still goes to everyone. Each change should be saved with a date so your consent records stay accurate.

Example

A Mumbai theatre company’s preference centre offers three topics: show announcements, workshops for adults, and children’s programmes. During exam season, a parent pauses emails for a month instead of unsubscribing, then resumes receiving only children’s programmes.

FAQ

Questions about Preference centre

Does a preference centre replace the unsubscribe link?

No. Keep a clear unsubscribe option in every email. The preference centre adds choices; it shouldn’t make leaving harder.

What options should a preference centre include?

Topics, a pause or snooze option, profile details and unsubscribe from all. Frequency choices are worth adding if you will honour them.

Do preference centres reduce unsubscribes?

They often reduce full unsubscribes by giving people a lighter alternative, though results depend on how relevant the options are.
