Analytics integration

Connect Google Analytics to MailNesto

UTM tags on every link so GA4 credits visits and conversions to your emails.

Overview

Google Analytics and MailNesto, together

Google Analytics can only credit email if your links say they came from email. Switch this connection on and links in your campaigns carry utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign when readers click them, so GA4 reports those visits, sign-ups and purchases under the right campaign instead of “direct”.

There is nothing to install in Google Analytics and no account to connect. You choose the source and medium names once, and how the campaign name is written; individual campaigns can override the tags in their own settings.

What syncs

What moves between Google Analytics and MailNesto

From MailNestoUTM tags on email links

utm_source and utm_medium with the values you set (medium is email unless you change it), and utm_campaign as the campaign name in slug form, the name as written or the campaign ID.

From MailNestoCampaign-level tags

A campaign with its own UTM settings uses them instead, including utm_term and utm_content when you fill them in.

From MailNestoLinks that already have tags

A link that already carries utm_source is left as it is, so hand-tagged links keep your values.

Set it up

Connect Google Analytics in a few minutes

  1. 1

    Turn it on

Go to Integrations → Connect an app → Google Analytics. Set utm_source, utm_medium and how utm_campaign is written, and click Connect. Only one Google Analytics connection is needed per workspace.

  2. 2

    Send a campaign

Readers who click a tracked link land on a URL with the tags added. Check by clicking a link in a test email and looking at the address bar.

  3. 3

    Read it in GA4

In GA4 open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition and filter to the email medium. Add the session campaign dimension to compare campaigns.

Ideas

What you can do with it

Compare email with paid social

With consistent tags, GA4 shows the conversion rate of email visitors next to ad visitors, which helps when you’re deciding where to spend before Diwali.

Test landing pages

Use utm_content in a campaign’s own settings to tell two buttons or two links apart, then see in GA4 which one led to more sign-ups.

Pair it with website tracking

GA4 shows the overall picture; MailNesto’s own website tracking adds which pages each subscriber visited after clicking, on their contact timeline.

FAQ

Questions about the Google Analytics integration

Does this send my contacts’ data to Google?

No. Only the tags in the link travel with the click: source, medium and campaign name. No email addresses are added to links.

What if I turn off click tracking for a campaign?

Links then go out exactly as written, so set UTM tags in that campaign’s own settings; those are added to the links when the email is built.

Can I use different source names per campaign?

Yes. Campaign-level UTM settings win over the workspace setting.

Will it break links to other websites?

No. Tags are added only to http and https links, and query parameters already in the link are kept.
