Welcome series: what it means

A short sequence of automated emails sent to new subscribers to introduce your brand and deliver anything promised at sign-up. It typically has three or four emails over a week or two.

A welcome series is a short sequence of automated emails sent to new subscribers in their first days or weeks. It usually has three or four emails. The first arrives immediately, delivers anything promised at sign-up and sets expectations; the later ones introduce your brand, show what you are best at and invite a first action, such as a purchase, booking or reply.

New subscribers are at their most interested right after signing up, so welcome emails typically get much more engagement than regular campaigns. That makes the series one of the most valuable automations a business can have. It also helps deliverability: early opens and clicks from new subscribers teach mailbox providers that your emails are wanted.

A common structure is: email one, an immediate welcome with the promised discount or download; email two, two or three days later, your story or what makes you different; email three, a few days after that, your bestsellers, most popular articles or customer favourites; and possibly an email four with a reminder that the welcome offer is ending. Branches can send a different follow-up to people who engaged with the first email and those who didn’t.

The most common mistakes are waiting days to send the first email, overloading it with every link you have, repeating the welcome offer after someone has already used it, and sending new subscribers your regular campaigns at the same time as the series. Add a goal so buyers leave the series, and keep it consistent with what the sign-up form promised.

Example

A Bengaluru plant shop’s welcome series: email one, sent instantly, includes a ₹150 first-order code and plant-care basics; if the subscriber opens it within two days they get a thank-you offer, otherwise a “Did you miss this?” email with the highlights. Anyone who places an order leaves the series.

In MailNesto

MailNesto includes a Welcome series recipe of three emails over five days that starts when someone joins a list, tags people who open the first email as engaged and sends a different follow-up to those who don’t.

FAQ

Questions about Welcome series

How many emails should a welcome series have?

Three or four is typical. Enough to introduce your brand and invite a first action without overwhelming new subscribers.

When should the first welcome email go out?

Immediately after sign-up, while the person still remembers subscribing and is most interested.

Should new subscribers get regular campaigns during the welcome series?

Ideally not, or only a few, so the series can do its job without the inbox filling up.
