What is BIMI?

Brand Indicators for Message Identification: a standard that lets supporting mailbox providers show your logo beside authenticated emails. It requires a DMARC policy of quarantine or reject, and providers such as Gmail also require a mark certificate.

BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) lets supporting mailbox providers display your brand logo next to emails that pass authentication. The logo appears in the avatar circle beside the sender name, which makes genuine mail from you easier to recognise and harder to imitate. Gmail, Apple Mail and Yahoo are among the providers that support it, each with its own conditions.

BIMI sits on top of email authentication rather than replacing it. Your domain must pass DMARC, and the DMARC policy must be enforcing: p=quarantine or p=reject, not p=none. In practice that means you first need SPF and DKIM aligned for every service that sends as your domain, including your marketing platform, your helpdesk and your billing system. Moving to an enforcing policy too early can block your own legitimate mail.

The record itself is a DNS TXT record, usually at default._bimi.yourdomain.com, that points to your logo in the SVG Tiny Portable/Secure format and, where required, to a mark certificate. Gmail and Apple require a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC), which is issued by approved certificate authorities and normally needs a registered trademark for the logo; Gmail also accepts a Common Mark Certificate for logos that have been in public use for some time. Certificates are paid for and renewed annually.

For most growing businesses, BIMI is a later step. The authentication work it depends on is what really protects deliverability; the logo is a visible reward for finishing that work. If you have a registered trademark and already run DMARC at quarantine or reject, BIMI is worth considering. If not, start with SPF, DKIM and a monitored DMARC policy.

Example

An organic tea brand in Kolkata already publishes DMARC at p=none. It reviews DMARC reports for six weeks, fixes an old invoicing tool that wasn’t DKIM-signing, moves to p=quarantine, buys a mark certificate for its registered logo and publishes a BIMI record. Its logo then starts appearing beside its emails in Gmail.

In MailNesto

The DNS lookup tool in MailNesto shows a domain’s MX, SPF, DMARC and BIMI records together, so you can see whether a BIMI record exists and whether DMARC is in place before you start.

FAQ

Questions about BIMI

Do I need a trademark for BIMI?

For a Verified Mark Certificate, generally yes. Some providers show logos without a certificate under their own rules, but Gmail and Apple require a certificate before displaying your logo.

Will BIMI improve my deliverability?

Not directly. BIMI shows your logo; it does not change spam filtering. The DMARC enforcement it requires does help protect your domain from spoofing, though.

Why doesn’t my logo show even though the record is set up?

Providers apply their own checks, including sender reputation and volume, and may cache results. Confirm DMARC is at quarantine or reject, the SVG is in the right format and the certificate is valid.
