Abandoned-cart email: what it means

An automated email sent to a shopper who added items to their cart but didn’t complete the purchase. It is often a short series of reminders sent over a day or two.

An abandoned-cart email is an automated reminder sent when a known shopper puts items in their cart and leaves without paying. It only works when the store can link the cart to an email address, which usually means the shopper was logged in, had subscribed earlier, or typed their email at the first step of checkout. Anonymous carts can’t be recovered by email.

Shoppers abandon carts for ordinary reasons: they were comparing prices, the delivery charge surprised them, a UPI payment timed out, or they were simply interrupted. A good reminder respects that. The first email is usually sent within an hour or two and simply shows the items, the total and a link that restores the cart in one tap. A second email, perhaps a day later, can answer common doubts about returns, cash on delivery or delivery times.

Discounts are where many stores go wrong. If every abandoned cart earns a coupon, regular customers learn to leave items in the cart and wait. A safer pattern is to hold the incentive back for the last email in the series, or offer it only to first-time buyers or to carts above a certain value. Also stop the series the moment an order comes in, so nobody is reminded about something they have already bought.

Cart emails are marketing messages, not transactional ones, so they need the shopper’s permission to receive marketing email and must carry an unsubscribe link. In India, that means relying on a clear opt-in collected at sign-up or checkout rather than assuming consent from the cart itself.

Example

A shopper in Jaipur adds two kurtas worth ₹2,450 to her cart and closes the tab. An hour later she gets “Your cart is waiting” with both items pictured and a “Finish checking out” button. She doesn’t return, so the next day a second email reminds her that the cart will expire soon. If she orders in between, the series stops.

In MailNesto

MailNesto has an Abandoned cart recovery recipe that starts when a Shopify or WooCommerce cart is left behind, shows the cart items and total, and includes a link that brings the shopper back to their cart.

FAQ

Questions about Abandoned-cart email

How soon should the first cart reminder go out?

Usually within one to three hours, while the shopper still remembers what they were buying. Waiting a full day tends to lose people who have already bought elsewhere.

How many cart reminders should I send?

Two or three over a day or two is typical. More than that starts to feel like pressure and can raise unsubscribes and spam complaints.

Do I need consent to send abandoned-cart emails?

Yes. They are marketing emails, so send them only to people who agreed to hear from you, and include a working unsubscribe link in each one.
